Hugo Disler's INQUISITIVE approach to business ANNOYS lots of farmers, but makes untold RICHES for those smart enough to listen and act on his farming advice.

        Well known for his remarkable ability to think outside the square, Hugo ventured into his first business partnership at the early age of 19 in agricultural contracting. However Hugo's dream of owning an agriculture business was put into difficulties when Hugo was called up for national service.

        This was a challenging time for Hugo because not only was he unavailable to support his business partner, but his partner was also left to solely run the business and maintain heavy financial commitments on the equipment.

        However on his return Hugo and his partner quickly rose to the occasion by starting a farm supply store and by applying steely focus he has become known for, turned his first business into a resounding success in record time. They soon had two semi-trailers and six tray trucks to bring in and distribute produce and fertilisers

        Their business was so successful they were amicably able to part and at the age of 27 Hugo was able to expand the business to one of the largest farming supply stores in Australia, Edward D. Greenfield known affectionately as ‘Greenfields'.

        As well as owning one of the largest farm supply store in Australia, in 1973 Hugo started a completely new national industry of selling disused railway sleepers for gardens. This landscape timber business soon incorporated otherwise wasted Red Gum timber into garden timbers and not long after Hugo was the first person to have ‘sleepers' made out of treated pine. A large nursery selling hundreds of fresh seedlings complemented the range and soon 3 more yards were opened to respond to the demand.

        Hugo also went on to further expand his business, using his ever inquiring style of information research. He allowed no time for the grass to grow under his feet as each of his businesses were hugely successful, allowing him to move forward to the next enterprise! Greenfields was soon the centre for Australian Country clothing selling the well known brands including R.M.Williams, Akubra, Blundstone, Thomas Cook and Yakka.

        Over the next three decades, Hugo met and talked with many farmers, gardeners and animal owners who called in to seek his advice. Over the years what struck Hugo was the  many tales he heard from farmers who had health issues that they blamed on the use of chemical sprays. These tales started him thinking and enquiring. Were there other products that would replace these sprays? As he met with many representatives of farm supply companies he constantly sought for the best products to not only give a good return for his customer, he looked for products that would be safe to use.

        Hugo had discovered a passion - for assisting his customers to not only get the best product with a good return on their money but also look after the environment and ultimately their health. People came from all over to buy his urea free blood and bone, his bags of mineral fertilisers and natural stock supplements. The story that changed Hugo's life and ultimately yours!!

        In 1989, what Hugo refers to as his "turning point" caused him to radically reassess his direction and discover a better way for farmers. While running one of the largest farm supply stores in Australia ‘Greenfields', Hugo learnt of a man who had developed a critical heart condition from using chemical sprays in is orchard. It was this horrific and all too common story that led Hugo to unearth a serious new option to synthetic products!

        Ted, a model kiwi fruit farmer and Agricultural Scientist in New Zealand, told the typical story of how he sprayed his orchard approximately 13 times per year with chemical pesticides and was still experiencing large amounts of fruit breakdown in storage amongst other problems. Now, we know that many of you farmers out there are all too familiar with the problems that Ted faced, so Hugo listened intently while Ted told of trialling liquid fish fertiliser on his kiwi orchard and instantly recognised an enormous difference.

        It couldn't have been any easier with Ted now only needing to spray his orchard only twice a year (that is 11 times less than when he was using chemicals), production increased dramatically and the occurrence of fruit breakdown decreased hugely. A simple, cheap change saved him a lot of money.

After learning of Ted's fish liquid fertiliser and the success stories with it, Hugo's interest in the product intensified. Hugo's large farming company ‘Greenfields' was quick to become a major buyer of the product and it is this story of discovery that ignited Hugo's passion for getting this message out to the farming world. 

Business Sold to Focus Solely on Helping Farmers

        So ‘Greenfields' was sold and a new business ‘Vitec' was bought in 1998. This company specialised in manufacturing natural fish and seaweed fertilisers and stock supplements. Even more valuable information was traded with farmers for their benefit and products developed to as the farmers' need arose.

        Hugo was quick to realise that spending as little as ten or twenty minutes on the phone to his clients would increase their farm profits by 10s and 100's of thousands of dollars and make farm life more enjoyable. As the business grew, it soon became obvious to Hugo and to his wife Helen that farmers needed far more practical support to make the change to balancing their farming practices.
